At the start of their senior year, Lynette loses her mother in a battle with cancer and Devanté is determined to turn his life around starting with graduating high school. Marcus, a high school marketing instructor and DECA advisor, plays a strong mentor to Lynette and Devanté in this disparate yet relevant novel as he deals with trials and tribulations of his own adult life. As the student’s advisor and teacher, he introduces them to DECA, a marketing club that allows them to compete with other students and explore career opportunities.
Though they differ in age as well as life stages, Lynette, Devanté and Marcus are all sitting at a crossroads in their lives as they are forced to make life altering decisions about marriage, sex, education, family, trust, mentors and love.
‘Laying My Past to Rest’ is a compelling story that brings to light the everyday struggles of misguided youth. It also brings faith to those adults who may have gone off track themselves. The characters are fictions but their stories are real, believable, and most significant to DelValle, relatable.
